Rembrandt Van Rhein, English name: Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, commonly known as Rembrandt, was born on July 15, 1606, and died on October 4, 1669. Rembrandt was one of the greatest painters in the Netherlands in the 17th century. Taiwan translated Rembrandt as Rembrandt. In his early years, Rembrandt followed the Dutch historical painter Pieter Lastman to learn painting, and opened a studio in his hometown in 1625. Rembrandt's works have a wide range of subjects, and he is good at portraits, landscapes, genre paintings, religious paintings, historical paintings, etc. Rembrandt left more than 600 oil paintings, more than 300 etchings and more than 2,000 drawings, and more than 100 self-portraits throughout his life.


Rembrandt was born in 1606 in a miller family in Leiden, The Netherlands. Her mother is the daughter of a baker. In addition to Rembrandt, they have 8 children.

Entered Leiden University at the age of 14; went to Amsterdam at the age of 17 to learn painting from the historical painter Lastman; at the age of 21 in 1627, Rembrandt had basically mastered the skills of oil painting, sketching and etching, and developed his own style. In the studio, he recruited students to paint. During the period, he painted many self-portraits. In 1631, Rembrandt left Leiden to Amsterdam. In the 1930s, he became the main portrait painter of Amsterdam. Rembrandt's portrait-style character arrangement is dramatic and deeply moving. Rembrandt's works on the theme of myths and religious stories are in short supply. Rembrandt is very interested in drama, and often uses bright colors like stage highlights to depict people on dark backgrounds.

From the 1640s, Rembrandt often went to the countryside to walk and paint, creating many sketches and prints reflecting nature, with a rustic style. 1661 was the year when Rembrandt painted the most, and created a large number of works including sketches, oil paintings and prints. After 1663, Rembrandt painted less. At this time, he made friends with many middle and lower class citizens. His vision was broader, his skills were more mature, and his creativity reached its peak.


The turning point of suffering in Rembrandt's life started from his masterpiece "Night Watch". In the process of drawing "Night Watch", Rembrandt stubbornly wanted to break the traditions of the time. Not accepted by the world, since then, fewer and fewer people have asked him to order paintings, and the life of the painter has gradually become down.


Rembrandt and his wife had 4 children, and only the youngest child, Titas, survived, but his wife died shortly after giving birth. Rembrandt lived with the maid, Handrek, and the maid gave him The daughter, named Cornelia, was condemned by the church for "sinful life." Because Rembrandt often purchases a lot of clothing and painting tools for painting, and never cares about property, he soon reached the edge of bankruptcy. In 1669, Rembrandt died of poverty and was accompanied only by his daughter. He was buried in an unknown cemetery in the Western Church after his death.


Rembrandt's oil paintings always use the "light and dark" treatment method, that is, using dark brown or light olive brown as the background, summing the light into a beam of concentrated lines like a flashlight, focusing on the main part of the painting. This kind of visual effect is like the figure in the picture is standing on the black stage, a strong light hit his face. The French 19th-century painter and critic Frommonte called Rembrandt a luminous insect. Others said he painted light in darkness.


Rembrandt's use of light is impressive. He uniquely uses light and dark. He flexibly handles light and dark light in complex pictures. Using light to strengthen the main part of the painting, it also weakens and melts secondary factors in the dark part.
